Bluebells
A bit about the room...
The Bluebells room welcomes children from the age of three and is part of a self-contained area within Winston’s Place. Children typically join Bluebells as soon as they turn three, with government funding supporting fifteen hours per week of term-time sessions for all three and four-year-olds starting the term after their third birthday.

Daily sessions, offered both morning and afternoon, provide developmentally appropriate activities aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, targeting the seven areas of learning and development. Funded morning sessions may last three, five, or seven hours and include breakfast, free play indoors and outdoors, group activities, and story time. The afternoon sessions follow a similar structure, ensuring continuity and consistency throughout the day.

The learning environment is carefully organised into clearly defined resource areas, encouraging children to explore their interests and develop skills independently. Children are supported to participate actively in all activities, with adults promoting and reinforcing learning across the seven EYFS areas.

Bluebells also offers enriching local outings to places such as libraries, parks, and shops, fostering curiosity and community awareness. In addition, educational trips to farms, and zoos provide broader learning experiences that extend beyond the nursery setting.

Self-help skills are a key focus; children practice using utensils properly at mealtimes, wash and dry their hands independently, and learn to dress themselves, including putting on coats and shoes. Opportunities to make snacks promote practical life skills and confidence. The children also take pride in displaying their work, achieving personal targets.

Each child’s development is carefully tracked through individualised profiles maintained by a dedicated key person, who provides consistent care and serves as a link between the nursery and parents or guardians. Parents are encouraged to contribute to their child’s next step planning.

Online daily diaries keep parents informed about their child’s meals and activities, ensuring open communication and partnership in their child’s growth and development.

Intent of the Bluebells room
-
For children to learn skills when preparing for their transition to F1.
-
Children are encouraged to develop their focus and concentration through listening to longer stories and retell what has happened in them.
-
For children to begin to self-regulate and explain what they are feeling and how they are able to shift their focus. Children are supported to develop increasing confidence, independence and a wider vocabulary.
-
To fully master their independence when toileting and washing themselves after meal times.
