Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

At Winston’s Place Day Nurseries, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, valued, included and supported to reach their full potential. We recognise that every child develops at their own pace and that some children may need additional support or adjustments to help them learn, grow and flourish.

With our two welcoming settings in Birkenhead and New Ferry, we are committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where children are encouraged to explore, develop their independence and enjoy their early years.

How we support children

We understand that every child has their own strengths, interests and individual needs. Our experienced practitioners take the time to get to know each child, recognising what makes them special and identifying how best to support their development.

Where additional support may be beneficial, we work to identify needs as early as possible through observations, ongoing assessments and discussions with families. We aim to make appropriate adjustments to our environment, resources, activities and routines to help children participate, feel included and make progress.

Our approach follows the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle, allowing us to consider each child's needs, plan appropriate support, put strategies into practice and review how well they are working. We recognise that support may need to change as a child grows and develops.

Working in Partnership with Families

We believe that parents and carers know their children best, and their knowledge and experiences are invaluable in helping us provide the right support.

We aim to build open, trusting relationships with families, keeping communication ongoing and involving parents and carers in discussions about their child's progress, development and any additional support that may be needed.

Where appropriate, we also work alongside relevant professionals and services to help us understand each child's needs and provide coordinated support. We value every child's voice, taking account of their interests, preferences and individual ways of communicating.

Meet our SENCO Team

Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinators (SENCOs) play an important role in supporting children, families and practitioners. They help coordinate SEND provision, support the early identification of additional needs and work with families and relevant professionals to promote inclusion and positive outcomes for children.

Our team is committed to continuing professional development and working together to build their knowledge and understanding of children's individual needs.

Supporting Transitions

We understand that changes, such as moving rooms, starting nursery or preparing for school, can be significant milestones for children and their families.

We aim to make transitions as positive and reassuring as possible by planning ahead, communicating with families and, where appropriate, working with other professionals and settings. This helps us prepare for each child's needs and support them as they move into their next stage of learning.

Further Support for Families

As a nursery within the Wirral local authority area, we recognise the importance of working with local services to support children with special educational needs and disabilities and their families.

The Wirral SEND Local Offer provides information about services, advice and support available to children and young people with SEND and their families.

You can find out more by visiting the Wirral SEND Local Offer or Wirral Council's early years SEND information page.
